Running RPi-Imager 2.0.7, the most recent version as far as I can tell.

Beyond the first boot, does cloud-init do anything useful?
This depends on your perspective, if your network settings are never going to change after the initial setup, then cloud-init ensures this. However, if you are like myself and want to set a fixed IP and dns domain once you have got Raspberry pi OS up and running, then cloud-init just gets in the way.

I did ask if rpi-imager could be given an option to turn off cloud-init after first boot, but this was refused.

First thing I do after the first boot is to open a terminal, type 'sudo touch /etc/cloud/cloud-init.disabled' and press enter.
