In 1988 I built a x/y plotter with a hard pen (4000bar water through 0.1mm hole in diamond):

I had to use same ramp up/down for that solution; the stepper motors were controlled via Office PC parallel port![Wink ;-)]()
The plotter did cut a zipper shape into 1m long insulation pipes, four in parallel in 20s.
The machine was in production in Belgium with 6x24h/week and produced 1.5million meter pipes a year.
I did that at a special machines company in parallel to my computer science studies at Dortund/Germany University.
