I finally worked up the courage to just go at the stand-off posts with pliers. They were easier to remove than I expected. Grab firmly, rock back and forth gently, just a little, and they pop out. If you're gentle enough, the metal back should not bend, mine did a bit, but I pressed it back pretty flat. It leaves a little bit of the rivet in the hole (like a sliver of metal) that should be removed if possible (tape, tweezers, etc.).
