This breaks compatibility with the ClockworkPi mainboard. I thought the CM5 was supposed to be more or less a drop-in replacement for the CM4? ..
why should RPT care about that? There is no need to upgrade from CM4 to CM5 will be my expected answer. Who told you it's a drop-in replacement? It can be used on CM4 baseboards with reduced functionality, your PWM audio is to be considered as such.
..
There's no way to put audio over GPIO 12/13 anymore at all?
No! You will have to use a USB sound card, I2S coded or extract Audio from HDMI channel.
The CM5 datasheet says PWM audio is available on pins 12-13. I made sure everything was compatible before I bought it. why make false claims in the datasheet if RPi has no intentions of making it work?
