In the morning I'll try the registry tweak to allow "insecure guest access" - it's been a long day tweaking / setting up the new Pi and solving the various problems along the way!
I'd just discovered that Windows 10 will allow me to access files if I log on as the Pi user / password (the ones you'd log on with in a terminal emulator session), so I was coming to the conclusion that it was an anonymous/guest access problem. Evidently something has changed in more recent versions of Debian / Rasp Pi OS, since it used to work OK on older versions of Raspbian or Rasp Pi OS.
